Things to know to save on your insurance
Everyone wants to save as much as possible when it comes to buying home and car insurance. But there are some things you shouldn't skimp on to save a few dollars.
Carrying higher liability limits on your car not only gives you protection should a claim arrise, but also can protect you from losing assetts or having a monetary judgement against you that can garnish your wages, place liens on properties, etc..
When insurance companies look at underwriting you on a new policy, prior liability limits factor into your new rate. So going with lower limits can actually make you have a higher premium in the long run.
Homeowner insurance can vary drastically from carrier to carrier. The things to watch for and be sure you understand is what deductible they are offering you and if there is a seperate wind and hail deductible. Seperate wind/hail deductibles can vary from company to company and can be thousands of dollars, so be sure you know what your policy has.
You want to be sure you have replacement cost on your dwelling and contents, and especially on your roof. If your coverage states it is ACV (actual cash value) that is Not a good thing. That means they will only pay you based on depreciation for age and wear.
Own a condo? Be sure your policy matches up to what the covenants and by laws state in your HOA documents. This is what an adjuster refers to when deciding what your policy is required to cover and what the HOA policy is supposed to cover.
